THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin Morgenstern

Two magicians use a unique circus as a venue for a grand competition.

THE NIGHT CIRCUS is a rare book, the kind that transports you to another world and keeps you completely engaged from start to finish. Erin Morgenstern's tale of a circus is rich, enchanting and refreshingly unique.

The tale follows the students of two master illusionists who are pitted against each other within the boundaries of a turn-of-the-century circus. Not fully understanding the nature of the competition, they build wonders for the visitors and mesmerize a generation of circus-goers. The characters are expertly drawn, and Morgenstern develops the complicated relationships with genuine passion.

Morgenstern's prose is pure magic. She slowly builds the dream world of the circus using language that is evocative and elegant. This is the kind of book that does not come along very often, and I implore you to read it if you haven't done so already.

What was the last book you read that stood out as something uncommonly special?

  1. I like to think that my China-America novel is special (with one chapter set in Hong Kong) ..:) Any chance that you will become also a literary agent in addition to being a free lance editor after finishing writing your memoir? Best wishes from Canada.

  2. This is on my to-read list. 2 books I read lately that stood out - The Human Bobby by Gabe Rotter (took me by surprise - not something I'd have picked at all based on its book cover or title, but so many bloggers gushed about it) and Children of Paranoia by Trevor Shane.

  3. This book sounds amazing! I really want to read it. I have heard so many fabulous things about it. From your review it is a must read. It is on my wishlist!!!!

I found you through Book Blogs and signed up to follow you. When you have a chance- please stop by and follow the blog for my middle grade novel that I am hoping to get published.

Also, my co-author, Stephanie, liked your fb page today. Please like us back at:

    Take care-
Jess- although I may show up as Fairday, the main character from my novel. I can't figure out how to fix it. :)

  4. You know, so many people have recommended this book to me that I've started to rebel against the thought of reading it, even though I know I would most likely love it :P

  5. Thanks for your comments everyone.

Giora, I would actually like to be a literary agent. I'm in the process of researching my options in HK :).

Christa, I haven't heard of either of those books, but thank you for the recommendations!

Thank you for following me Jess. Best of luck with your MG novel!

Sam, I resisted Eat Pray Love for the same reason, but I ended up enjoying it. I hope you'll give this one a chance!

  6. The Night Circus is a magical read with some delightful imagery. There were a few points where I felt the story began to drag, but overall I enjoyed it very much. Some have called it a love story, and it does have that thread running through it, but the cold heartedness of some of the main drivers of the story is chilling. Worth the read.

  7. I really enjoyed this book as well, I just listened to the audio version of this and reviewed it on my blog. I also added a link to your review on my blog (please let me know if this isn't ok). If you get a chance, check it out:
