Bookspotting: Week 20

This week in bookspotting was pretty quiet compared to last week, when I spent three days in Taipei. Exam week is in full swing in Hong Kong, so I noticed a lot of young people carrying textbooks and spreading their notes over the tables in cafes across the city. I saw two kids who had taken a break from their textbooks reading graphic novels, and I saw one Hong Kong guidebook in an indeterminate language. I spent a rainy afternoon in the unique Duddell Street Starbucks, where a man was reading a new paperback with a black cover and a title that started with the letter 'D'. I spotted three Chinese books on the train, but I didn't notice any other titles, possibly because I was completely entranced by One Hundred Years of Solitude, which I'll review tomorrow.

What are people reading in your town this week?

I was in two different bookstores last week and saw a woman buying an anthology of Pablo Neruda's poems, a girl buying a James Patterson novel (trade size, not mass market), and a man buying a hardcover copy of the latest Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel novel and joking to his lady companion (whom he was presumably buying it for) that if it made his satchel too heavy, she would have to carry it for the rest of the evening.

Outside of the bookstores, however, I haven't been so lucky in my bookspotting.
