Bookspotting: Week 18

This week I saw a woman on the MTR reading a paperback Sherlock Holmes book, but I couldn't tell which one it was. I saw a man walking up Wellington Street carrying a Kindle without a cover. I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon on Lamma Island, where there was a man sitting at an outdoor cafe with a stack of three books on the table next to him. He had The Motorcycle Diaries, A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away by Christopher Brookmyre, and a novel by John Le Carre. I counted a total of three Hong Kong guidebooks between the ferry and the island. I saw four Chinese books this week, most of them on the train. I also bought a last-minute plane ticket to Taiwan, so look for Bookspotting: Taipei Edition next weekend.

What are people reading in your town this week?

  3. I saw the HK guide books on the Lamma Ferry where I too spent a lovely Sunday afternoon! Thanks for inviting me along, Shannon!During the week I saw a Chinese girl reading an exquisitely illustrated Chinese poetry book, a teenager reading a bi-lingual English/Chinese book called "NEWS" which from the spine label and top edge rubberstamping, was a library book. I also saw a boy reading what looked from the cover like a "Star Wars" comic or manga type book. Everyone on the morning MTR reads the Chinese version of "Metro", the free newspaper which we also have on UK public transport.

  4. Wow, people in HK certainly do quite a bit of reading. I'm from Malaysia and it would be a miracle to spot someone carrying a book other than a textbook. :)

  5. Went camping with friends over the Memorial Day weekend. They were my kind of campers -- they like to sit around the campsite and read! The man was reading a John Grisham novel, King of Torts. The woman was reading a library book called Bake Until Golden, which is part of a series called The Potluck Club. In the back of the book were recipes that looked worth trying. I was reading Radical Faith on my Kindle.
