This week I saw a lot of people reading textbooks. You can tell that exams are approaching because there are so many people studying on the trains. These books have exciting titles like Architecture and Engineering 101. I counted five Chinese books this week, but I didn't see as many English titles as I normally do. Early in the week I saw a woman reading a book called Coaching, but I could not see the subtitle. I saw a little girl reading a Bernstein Bears book, which brought back memories of when my siblings and I would take every single one of the books in that series out of the library repeatedly. Last night I spotted two people reading little English paperbacks on the Tsuen Wan line, although they got off the train before I could read the titles, and I saw a girl with a new Kindle in a bright blue cover.
What are people reading in your town this week?
Hi, Shannon,
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying your blog! I haven't progressed to a Kindle yet, but...I'll be coming to live in Hong Kong in about 6 weeks time and thinking of getting one as I noticed that books are quite expensive there!
I was selected as a "giver" for World Book Night so I'm bringing some of my remaining copies of Life of Pi to give away. Maybe you could be my first HK recipient!
I have to confess before I post what people are reading where I am....I am a High School librarian (but will be retired when I come to Hong Kong) so I see people reading all day long! Today I lent amongst other things, John Irving Cider House Rules, Nicholas Sparks Dear John, 12 books about astronomy,a book about caring for guinea pigs, Jeanette Winterson Tangleweed...
ReplyDeleteExam time...even now, decades after that time in my life I still get a little clench in the stomach when the trees come into leaf and blossom, and remember when it was mingled with anxiety about exams. And then, it's like waking up after a dream and realizing the strange stuff wasn't true: I don't do exams any longer!
ReplyDeleteSadly I haven't seen anyone reading a book today. The builders are too occupied with their stonework!
I was happily ensconed in a library with children running about and I saw Beast Quest, and Ramona and Beezus (Cover with Selena Gomez on it), and Bad Kitty (never saw this one before so I took a peak. Hmmm). That's it. I like the kid sections better for some reason. All the adults are noisy.... :)

I remember the Bernstein Bears from when I was little! I read those books :) They even had a little cartoon show that I watched!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone! I'm glad to hear that there are plenty of books around this week, especially kids books.
ReplyDeleteJoyce, I'm sure you'll just love Hong Kong! There's nowhere else like it in the world. Shoot me an email when you arrive if you'd like to grab a cup of coffee: snyoung88@gmail.com.
Hi Shannon, I've passed on an award to you!
ReplyDeleteWell, we just celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday last week in the States and it was all Seuss all the time! (I have two young kids, so this is the kind of stuff that hits my radar!) Otherwise, I very much miss my commute (I write from home now), when I could spy on my fellow readers going in and out of Manhattan on the train. Harder to do now...
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun feature; I love reading about the books people are spotting. I chuckled about Joyce lending out 12 books on astronomy -- it must be exam (or report/project) time in her high school, too!
