Bookspotting: Week 61

Welcome to another week of bookspotting! Earlier this week, I saw two schoolgirls reading side-by-side on the train. One had a Chinese book and the other had a James Patterson novel. I spotted a man on the MTR reading something called Poor Economics and a woman reading a Sophie Kinsella book, though I couldn't tell which one. On Saturday, I saw a young man walking through Causeway Bay and reading the first few pages of The Hunger Games. I saw the movie on Sunday and really enjoyed it. On Monday, I saw a woman carrying The Help in Soho (also a good movie).

So, what are people reading in your town this week? Did you see the movie of the week?

  1. I haven't seen the movie, but my 13 year old did the night it opened. I'll forever be grateful to his friend's parents for taking the kids to a midnight screening. I just read that James Patterson donated 200,000 books to US troops. What a great gift!

    1. I didn't do the midnight showing for this, but I used to love going to midnight showings before I started working. I remember going to the Lord of the Rings midnight opening before my German final in high school. I still ended up doing alright if I remember correctly.

  2. I don't know if I could read Hunger Games. I read Battle Royale, and minus the teenage love plot in Hunger Games, the premise sounds suspiciously similar. Have you read either?

    1. I've read the Hunger Games and I watched the Battle Royale movie just last week. It is a very similar premise, though the Hunger Games adds a more glamorous, reality TV-like side to the basic idea. Battle Royale (the Japanese film) is much more raw and dark.

  3. I have it on good authority, (a friend whose movie taste I trust) to wait and see it on DVD. He said it simply was not that good.

    1. I'm sure your opinion will vary a lot based on how you feel about the books. I enjoyed the books, and I felt the movie was entertaining. I tend not to expect too much from book-to-movie adaptations, which allows me to be pleasantly surprised more often than not. I saw it with two men (fiance and his father) who both haven't read the books, and they both seemed to like it.
