Bookspotting: Week 46

This week I spotted a man on the MTR reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett, which I haven't read yet, though I enjoyed the movie. On a very chilly Sunday afternoon I saw a man in a busy coffee shop reading The Undercover Economist. I spotted five Chinese books this week and three textbooks. Exam season must be approaching again.

In other bookspotting adventures: I explored the "local interest" section of Bookazine while I was at Chris Thrall's book signing. It's amazing how many books there are on China. I've read my fair share of books about China and books by Chinese writers, but there is so much more I have been missing and I don't know when I'll ever get to it.

What's your favorite book about China or one you've been wanting to read? What are people reading in your town this week?

Fiction The secret mandarin by Sara Sheridan, which is an account of Scottish plant hunter Robert Fortune's travels in China and Fact, Three years wandering in the northern provinces which is Fortune's own account of his travels. My upcoming fiction must-read is Alex Kuo's The man who dammed the Yangtze, for my book club.

  2. Wow, I would have loved to see the local interest section with all those China books. I, too, have thought I've read most, but then of course I always come across dozens I've never heard of! For we who are writing about China/HK, I guess it's good news China is still hot!

I'm currently reading 'Apologiesa Forthcoming:Stories Stories Not About Mao' published by Blacksmith Books. It's a collection of short stories about China either during the CR or just after. Very good!

  3. I always enjoyed Tikki Tikki Tembo when I was growing up. I would like to read Ruby's Wish.

I love this post and the fact that you mention what you saw everyone reading. So fun! I am going to pay attention to what everyone is reading. I also want to read The Help.

    Thanks for sharing!
